Shellharbour City Council will celebrate 47 of the City's most talented young athletes with a special civic reception on Wednesday 24 July 2024.
These athletes have been awarded a prestigious scholarship at the Illawarra Academy of Sport for 2024 and represent a diverse range of sports including cycling, basketball, hockey, netball, and more.
Council has a long history of supporting the Illawarra Academy of Sport, this year donating more than $18,000 towards the scholarship program.
The Illawarra Academy of Sport is renowned for its comprehensive approach to athlete development and equips our young sportspeople with the necessary skills to excel and thrive in their chosen fields. Beyond honing their athletic abilities, the academy prepares these promising individuals for the demands and opportunities of a professional sporting career.
Shellharbour City Mayor Chris Homer said he is proud of Council's commitment to developing and maintaining sports facilities across the city and the results of this investment can be seen in the ongoing success of local sportspeople.
"We are immensely proud of our local athletes and their dedication to their chosen sports," he said.
"Earning a place at the Academy is no small feat, and it's a testament to not only the athletes' incredible talents but their dedication, perseverance, and unwavering commitment to excellence."
"I'm proud that our facilities and support will help these recipients achieve even more amazing things in the coming years," Mayor Homer said.
