Honouring Their Service This Anzac Day

Tasmanian Government

Tasmanians have honoured the service and sacrifice made by our Anzacs 111 years ago on 25 April 1915 at Gallipoli.

Minister for Veterans' Affairs, Gavin Pearce, who served in the Australian Army for 20 years, said honouring those who have served, fought and given their lives for the freedoms we value today, is the least we can do to give thanks.

"As the sun rose over Tasmania this morning, we gathered to reflect and remember all Australians who have served in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations - with over 103,000 making the ultimate sacrifice in the defence of our nation," Minister Pearce said.

"As we move through our day, let us find a quiet place to remember those who put the security of our nation above themselves, ensuring all Australians can have a safer tomorrow.

"More than 15,000 Tasmanians served in World War I, with approximately 3,000 making the ultimate sacrifice.

"To those unable to attend a service, I urge you to take a moment and reflect on the bravery, friendship and commitment that embodies the Anzac spirit.

"I want to extend my deepest gratitude to RSL Tasmania and their sub-branches for organising the many Anzac Day services across our state.

"There are more than 17,500 veterans in Tasmania, and I encourage all Tasmanians to take the opportunity to reach out and say thank you for your service."
