Got a stash of old chemicals lurking in your garage or garden shed? It's time for a spring clean, with the annual Household Chemical CleanOut event returning for 2024.
Residents across the Snowy Monaro can dispose of potentially hazardous household chemicals completely free of charge, with this important initiative giving everyone an easy way to dispose of these potentially hazardous materials safely and responsibly.
This year's event will take place on Friday 11 October 2024 from 1pm to 4pm at the Cooma Landfill, located at 8448 Monaro Highway, Cooma.
When chemicals are disposed of improperly – poured down drains, thrown out with rubbish, or dumped as litter – they can cause serious damage to the environment and pose a sometimes deadly threat to human and animal health. That's why Council is proud to participate in this yearly free drop-off event, and encourages communities across the region to participate.
Residents can drop off household quantities of many common chemicals, up to a maximum of 20 litres or 20 kilograms of a single item. Paint is accepted in quantities up to 100 litres in 20 litre containers.
Accepted items include:
- Solvents and household cleaners
- Pesticides and herbicides
- Pool chemicals
- Motor fuels
- Fluorescent globes and tubes
- Acids and alkalis
- Paint and paint-related products
- Gas bottles
- Fire extinguishers
- Car and household batteries
- Motor oils and cooking oils
For those unable to make the October event, paint, fire extinguishers, gas bottles, batteries, and oils can be dropped off for free year-round at Community Recycling Centres located at the landfills in Cooma and Jindabyne. Smaller quantities of these items are also accepted at Bombala Landfill, visit our website for details.
Household Chemical CleanOut is supported by the NSW Environment Protection Authority and Paintback. This year's event is organised by the Canberra Region Joint Organisation and Environmental Treatment Solutions, hosted by Council.
