Hume City Council's quarterly Hume Clean Day continues to be popular with residents, drawing 1,329 visitors to the city's Resource Recovery Centres in 2024.
On Hume Clean Days residents can visit our Resource Recovery Centres in Campbellfield and Sunbury to drop off up to 15 tyres, couches and mattresses for free.
Residents can also drop off up to 4 cubic metres of organic garden material such as leaves, grass clippings and pruning waste.
In 2024, residents dropped off 435 couches, 1,080 mattresses, 3,007 tyres and 287 loads of garden waste on Hume Clean Days, without paying any tip fees or using their annual waste vouchers.
Many visitors also used the days to drop off white goods and other e-waste at the same time.
E-waste (anything powered by a cord, battery or plug) is free to drop off at our Resource Recovery Centres at any time, along with other items including cardboard, paint, motor oil and barbecue gas bottles.
Expanding Hume Clean Day from Saturday to the whole weekend starting in September was a big contributor to its success last year.
Residents enjoyed the convenience of the additional day, with more than double the number of visitors coming to Hume Clean Day in September and December compared to the previous year.
The number of mattresses dropped off almost doubled (720 in September/December 2024 compared to 430 in 2023), as did the number of tyres (2,032 in 2024, up from 1,197 in 2023). The number of couches remained steady (284 in 2024, up from 276 in 2023).
These items are frequently found in illegal dumped rubbish. Providing a free option to residents helps keep them off the streets and ensures that as much material as possible can be recovered for recycling and kept out of landfill.
The next Hume Clean Day will be held on Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 March 2025.
