The Allan Labor Government is fast-tracking the delivery of more homes close to public transport, after giving the greenlight to a South Melbourne development which will provide hundreds of Victorians a place to call home.
Minister for Planning Sonya Kilkenny today announced the approval of more than 240 new homes on Dorcas Street in South Melbourne, close to the new Anzac Station which will open with the Metro Tunnel later this year.
This 20-storey Time & Place development will deliver a mix of studio, one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom homes, alongside retail space, providing hundreds of Victorians with a home close to transport, jobs, and services.
Fast-tracked through the Development Facilitation Program, the project is part of the Labor Government's broader strategy to deliver more homes where Victorians want to live - close to transport, jobs, schools, and services.
Transformational infrastructure projects like the Metro Tunnel and Suburban Rail Loop are unlocking opportunities for the Labor Government to deliver thousands more homes close to public transport.
Since the release of the Housing Statement, the Minister for Planning has used her powers to deliver more than 15,000 homes - a more than 100 per cent increase on previous periods.
Late last year, the Labor Government also introduced bold housing reforms to deliver more homes near train and tram stations, provide more infrastructure where homes are built, and slash stamp duty for off-the-plan apartments, units and townhouses.
The latest Australian Bureau of Statistic data shows Victoria builds more homes than anywhere else in the country - approving and completing thousands of more homes than New South Wales and Queensland.
As stated by Minister for Planning Sonya Kilkenny
"We've fast-tracked more homes in the heart of South Melbourne to ensure hundreds more Victorians can live around the corner from the brand-new Anzac Station as well as trams, the Botanical Gardens, schools, shops and services."
"We know more Victorians want the choice to live close to public transport and projects like the Metro Tunnel and the Suburban Rail Loop are helping deliver just that - enabling thousands more homes to be built in areas well-connected to public transport."
As stated by Member for Albert Park Nina Taylor
"Hundreds of people will soon have the opportunity to live in this incredible spot in South Melbourne, with the new Anzac Station, the Shrine of Remembrance and the Botanical Gardens right at their fingertips."
