Adelaide's heritage will be better preserved with hundreds of buildings approved for enhanced heritage protections.
The buildings across Gawler, Holdfast Bay, Walkerville and Mount Barker have been recognised as being of Local Heritage significance and will now be subject to stronger demolition controls, above and beyond those which already apply to them.
Minister for Planning and Local Government Vickie Chapman said the 254 new listings brings the total number of Local Heritage Places approved by the Marshall Liberal Government to 460.
"Be it their historical significance, architectural importance or reflection of the area's charm, these buildings deserve extra protection so they can be enjoyed for generations to come," Minister Chapman said.
"Once listed as Local Heritage Places under the Code, these properties will be further safeguarded from potential demolition.
"Anyone who tries to knock the buildings down in the future will face even higher threshold tests, helping to ensure their longevity," she said.
Four local councils sought approval to have Local Heritage Place protections added to buildings in their area. These were assessed by the State Planning Commission before a recommendation was made to the Minister.
The four councils were:
- The Town of Gawler (150 new Local Heritage Places)
- The City of Holdfast Bay (34 new Local Heritage Places)
- The Town of Walkerville (34 new Local Heritage Places)
- The District Council of Mount Barker (36 new Local Heritage Places)
Minister Chapman said it's important that councils review their areas and consider seeking approval for extra protection on buildings and structures they believe require it.
"This Government is committed to protecting and preserving the architectural history of our great State, to ensure our children, and children's children, can enjoy its charm.
"It's why we bolstered heritage protections in the Planning and Design Code and have established a Heritage Advisory Panel to further examine heritage policy," she said.
Member for Adelaide Rachel Sanderson has welcomed the additional protection for significant buildings across Walkerville.
"I wholeheartedly endorse this move which will better protect Walkerville's stunning character buildings and homes," she said.
City of Holdfast Bay Mayor Amanda Wilson said all buildings put forward hold significant importance for the Glenelg area.
"As Glenelg was the first mainland settlement in the state, our homes, buildings and environment are rich in character and history," she said.
"We are committed to proactively protecting and celebrating our heritage properties - not only for their immediate owners, but for future generations."
More than 7,000 buildings are covered by a Local Heritage Place overlay in South Australia, all of which can be viewed in the Planning and Design Code and the South Australian Heritage Register.
