A new roundabout on the Channel Highway at Huntingfield is ready to serve a major new residential subdivision being developed by Homes Tasmania.
Minister for Infrastructure, Michael Ferguson, said the roundabout will provide safe access to the highway for residents of the subdivision.
"The roundabout will give the future subdivision residents easy and safe access to the highway," Minister Ferguson said.
"It has been designed to minimise disruption to Hobart-bound highway traffic, which averages over 9,000 vehicles a day, by adding a slip lane, so people travelling north towards Hobart can bypass the new roundabout without having to slow down."
The project also includes upgrades for cyclists.
"We have included a two-metre-wide sealed shoulder on the slip lane for riders cycling north, and they will not need to use the roundabout," Minister Ferguson said.
"For riders cycling south towards Margate, a shared path alongside the Channel Highway leading up to the roundabout is available, and a refuge in the new traffic island at the entry to the subdivision makes it easier and safer to cycle through the roundabout.
"As part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future, we're investing in roads and bridges across the State to reduce traffic congestion and improve traffic flow and driver safety."
The roundabout and slip lane were already in use for highway traffic and the subdivision entrance on the roundabout will be opened once the development's internal road network is developed.
