The University launched its new Interdisciplinary Centre for Sustainability Research (ICSR) as part of its annual Sustainability Week.
The ICSR will support teams of researchers who can collectively tackle the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It will act as a nexus for interdisciplinary research and impact at Liverpool by bringing together researchers with different types of knowledge, experience and skills from across the University, as well as promote engagement with national and international experts.
The ICSR's mission is to:
- Strengthen collaboration across disciplines within the University and beyond.
- Identify and support funding bids for high-impact interdisciplinary research projects.
- Attract and develop talent in interdisciplinary sustainability research.
- Enhance the University's research environment and advance its Liverpool 2031 strategy.
Professor Katie Atkinson, Director of the ICSR, said: "The ICSR is a hugely exciting initiative to expand impactful interdisciplinary research collaborations here at Liverpool and advance our work on UN Sustainable Development Goals.
"I look forward to fostering new partnerships and driving research that will have a lasting impact on sustainability at local, national, and global levels."
Industry collaboration
The ICSR launch featured keynote speaker Dr Juan Bernabé-Moreno, Director of IBM Research Europe (Ireland and UK) and IBM's Climate and Sustainability Accelerated Discovery Lead.
He highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in tackling urgent environmental and societal challenges.
IBM is already partnering with the ICSR and is supporting PhD studentships, including one commencing in 2025.
Dr Bernabé-Moreno added: "Tackling climate change and addressing the United Nations SDGs requires collaboration across all disciplines, along with leveraging technology, and that's what makes this new research centre so exciting for us to engage with."
Get Involved: Inaugural workshops
Academics across the University with an interest in climate change research are encouraged to join the ICSR's inaugural workshops.
These sessions are aimed at researchers from all disciplines whose work aligns with climate-related SDGs and who are keen to collaborate in an interdisciplinary setting.
