On 23 September 2024, a distinguished delegation of Heads of Missions from the Latin American region, led by its Dean, Ambassador Juan Francisco Facetti Fernandez, Permanent Representative of Paraguay to the International Organizations in Vienna, visited IIASA to explore avenues for meaningful research collaborations.
The event, initiated by Ambassador Facetti Fernandez, a scientist by training, brought together ambassadors of Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Panama, and Peru, providing a unique platform for in-depth discussions on enhancing bilateral and regional cooperation with IIASA.
The delegation was welcomed by IIASA Deputy Director General Karen Lips. Fabian Wagner, Dean of IIASA Capacity Development and Academic Training, provided information about the IIASA Young Scientists Summer Program (YSSP) and other capacity building opportunities, such as various postdoctoral programs that IIASA can offer to early career researchers from the region. Head of IIASA's Communications and External Relations Department, Barbara Kreissler, highlighted the benefits of IIASA membership for the respective countries and offered insights into impactful IIASA research projects with Latin America.
Throughout the meeting, IIASA expressed its commitment to building strong partnerships with countries in the region and mentioned the prospect of a potential regional membership, which was positively received by participants. The Ambassadors also presented their countries' scientific priorities and visions for collaboration and highlighted shared challenges that the Latin American region faces, such as climate change and natural disasters, underscoring the need to strengthen the role of science in policymaking processes, along with joint research efforts and solutions.
During the break, participants enjoyed a traditional Paraguayan snack, chipa, courtesy of Ambassador Facetti Fernandez, which added a regional touch to the event.
The visit concluded with the signing of the IIASA guest book and a group photo, marking a promising step towards deepened cooperation between IIASA and countries of the Latin American region.
