A woman who leased land on Wallan Road, Whittlesea, which became an illegal waste site, has been fined $45,000 and ordered to pay the estimated $200,000 cost of cleaning it up.
Katelyn Hansen was the leaseholder of the land when demolition waste, which included asbestos, was dumped there.
In Heidelberg Magistrates Court on Wednesday, EPA submitted that Hansen provided false information to EPA investigators and disregarded an EPA notice requiring the removal of the waste.
Illegal waste dumping is a major environmental issue as people try to avoid paying the cost of complaint disposal. The size of the clean up bill reflects the clean-up costs, said EPA.
