Australia's newest major event, Illuminate Adelaide today announces the program details of two regional events Big Picture Series x Colour Tumby in Tumby Bay from 13-21 August, as well as In Depth, a large-scale multimedia project by Craig Walsh and the local community from 17 September to 9 October in Renmark.
It follows the success of Illuminate Adelaide's first regional activation, Digital Garden in Mount Gambier, which kicked off on 9 June and finishes tonight. The regional activations are an initiative supported by the South Australian Tourism Commission and in partnership with innovative regional councils and award-winning artists, with the aim to shine a light on South Australia this winter and drive visitation across the state.
South Australian Tourism Commission chief executive Rodney Harrex said the first of three regional activations of Illuminate Adelaide had been a huge success.
"There has been an incredible turnout of visitors to the first Illuminate Adelaide regional activation in Mount Gambier, with around 10,000 visitors across the four weeks," he said.
"Providing more reasons for South Australians to get out to the regions, particularly during the winter months, is key to driving the recovery of our visitor economy. The economic and social benefits of regional events are hugely important to these local communities and we look forward to extending this success to the Eyre Peninsula and Riverland from next month."
Located in the Eyre Peninsula's township of Tumby Bay, Big Picture Series x Colour Tumby will feature a street art walking tour reimagined for the digital age.
It will feature three renowned South Australian artists Dave Court, Tom Borgas and Zoe Kirkwood presenting Augmented Reality Sculptures, and a presentation of a large-scale digital mural and Curator of Big Picture Series, Vans the Omega, presenting his new installation Light Beyond the Window Breaks.
Illuminate Adelaide is also pleased to be collaborating with mural festival, Colour Tumby, to illuminate several existing murals that will be painted throughout this incredible street art event, encouraging audiences to return and witness these murals in a new light throughout the town.
The Riverland township of Renmark will also host a regional activation of Illuminate Adelaide, with a large-scale multimedia project featuring projection, lighting and soundscape presented by Craig Walsh in collaboration with the local community. Featuring large-scale projection, creative lighting and soundscape over the Murray River, this event will transform the river and river banks adjacent to the Renmark Club, each day after dark.
Australian artist and creative producer Craig Walsh is internationally known for his pioneering approaches to site-responsive installations, sculpture and projection mapping unconventional sites.
His works have animated natural and built environments and features such as trees, rivers and mountains, as well as public art projects in urban and architectural space.
Craig's work remains distinctive for its conceptual underpinnings and deftly woven narrative.
Over recent years he has extended his site responsive expertise into work with diverse communities, enabling large-scale participation as collaborators in contemporary art projects and public art. Through recent projects, Craig is developing works that change and evolve over time to provide opportunities for continual community engagement and interaction.
