Important information for families – TC Alfred
All visits, including in-person, virtual and professional visits to South East Queensland prisons have been cancelled for the remainder of this week in preparation for TC Alfred.
This will be reassessed on Monday at which time we'll provide an update.
This includes Woodford, Wolston, Brisbane Men's, Arthur Gorrie, Brisbane Women's, Southern Queensland, Palen Creek, Helana Jones and Numinbah correctional centres.
In order to keep prisoners safe, changes to out of cell access are likely to occur.
This will mean that as the cyclone approaches and makes landfall, as well as during the initial phase of recovery, prisoners are likely to have limited access to phones until normal operations resume. We will do everything we can to safely return operations to normal as soon as possible.
The prisoners from Numinbah Correctional Centre have been returned to Brisbane Women's Correctional Centre to ensure their safety, as the low security farm is subject to unpredictable flooding.
South East Queensland prisons are well prepared for TC Alfred.
The prisons will go into lockdown this afternoon to allow as many of our officers as possible to be off the roads before the cyclone hits.
Prisoners will remain in their units until is it safe for them to go outside. All of our high security centres are built to withstand extreme weather, and none are susceptible to flooding or damage from falling trees.
The centres are all equipped with enough food and medication for at least seven days, and they have backup power supply to ensure operations are unaffected.
