Improved Access At Four Springs Lake

Eric Abetz, Minister for Business, Industry and Resources

As part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future, we're upgrading facilities around our waterways across Tasmania.

Minister for Business, Industry and Resources, Eric Abetz, said several important projects, funded through the Tasmanian Liberal Government's commitment to improve access for freshwater anglers, have been completed in time for the opening of the brown trout season.

"Four Springs Lake has become one of Tasmania's most popular recreational fisheries due to its proximity to major population centres, low altitude and careful management of the recreational fishery by the Inland Fisheries Service (IFS)," Minister Abetz said.

"The Tasmanian Liberal Government recently invested $180,000 at Four Springs Lake towards a variety of projects including the construction of a 9 kilometre walking trail circumnavigating the lake with duck boarding and a footbridge," Minister Abetz said.

"The walking trail project involved a land transfer agreement between the IFS and private landowner, and will greatly improve foot access to the western and northern shores of the lake.

"The walking trail will be of great benefit to anglers and no doubt be popular with other users of the Four Springs reserve such as hikers, bird watchers and dog walkers."

"Other recent projects include an extension to the lake's car park with the addition of new fencing and gates installed to help ensure security for neighbouring properties and provide access to water for firefighting. The angling jetty on the western shore has also received an upgrade.

"These improvements have enhanced the existing facilities at Four Springs Lake that include a boat ramp and jetty, accessible angling platform, kayak launch and public toilet.

"Additionally, other popular fishing destinations now have increased angler accessibility, with the construction of a 70-metre jetty at Huntsman Lake, designed to function at all lake levels, and both a single lane-concrete boat ramp and multi-level timber jetty at Little Pine Lagoon complete.

"The brown trout season opens on 3 August and angling licences are now available for purchase. There is no fee for junior angling licences and a discounted licence rate is being offered for 18 to 21-year-olds this angling season."

Angling licence renewals, and new licence purchases for the 2024-25 season are now available on the IFS website: https://www.ifs.tas.gov.au/anglers/manage
