Homes for Queenslanders: shovels hit ground on Inala homes
  • Works underway on 14 more homes, part of nearly 1,000 currently in construction across state
  • Follows tenants moving into 10 new homes just around the corner in Darra
  • Miles Government's Homes for Queenslanders plan includes 53,500 more social homes

Construction is well underway on 14 more social homes in Brisbane's south-west as the Miles Government delivers its social housing Big Build.

The homes are part of nearly 1,000 social homes currently being built across Queensland through the Homes for Queenslanders plan.

It's a stark contrast to the LNP, who are currently blocking 8,000 Queenslanders from buying their own home.

Being built by Kane Constructions (QLD), the 13 one-bedroom and one three-bedroom apartments are aimed at older Queenslanders and social housing tenants looking to downsize from their current homes, freeing larger homes up for families.

It will mainly feature accessible homes suited for people with a disability and seniors who may have mobility needs, and is located close to nearby shops, medical services and public transport.

It comes as another 10 homes were recently completed nearby in Darra, with tenants now moved in.

As stated by Member for Inala Margie Nightingale:

"We know that one-bedroom units such as these are in high demand, particularly for young people and seniors looking to downsize.

"Giving seniors the opportunity to downsize to smaller, more suitable housing allows us to free up larger social homes for families in need.

"It's particularly great to see local builders utilising innovative methods to get these homes online as soon as possible.

"These new social homes join dozens of other homes being built right now in our community in places like Richlands for first homeowners."

As stated by Housing Minister Meaghan Scanlon:

"We're getting more shovels in the ground and tradies on the tools to build the homes Queenslanders need, like here in Inala.

"Our Homes for Queenslanders plan is delivering - whether it's building or buying more social homes, working with community housing, helping first homeowners and renters or supporting people sleeping rough.

"We'll build one million more homes, including 53,500 social homes, while the LNP continue to block more Queenslanders from achieving home ownership."

As stated by Kane Constructions QLD General Manager Phillip Mayze, builders of Inala complex:

"Kane Constructions QLD are excited to be partnering with Department of Housing, Local Government, Planning and Public Works to deliver another social housing project.

"This project will see Kane continue our experience in the delivery of social and community housing, using an innovative hybrid concrete and cross laminated timber construction methodology to deliver 14 new apartments and associated communal spaces.

"Works will be delivered by local subcontractors and apprentices with completion scheduled for mid- 2025."

As stated by Nileport Projects Managing Director Tom Ropelin, builders of Darra complex:

"Nileport has been proud to work with the Queensland Government on this very worthwhile project in Darra.

"The demand for housing throughout Queensland is well documented and my organisation is happy to be associated to a solution for this issue."

As stated by new resident Anne Steele, who moved into the Darra complex from the three-bedroom social home she raised her four children in:

"The house was getting too big for me and the steps were getting hard, and everything like that, so I'm downsizing. It's sad to be leaving all my friends, but I'm only about 10 minutes away so I can go and see them anytime.

"I love my new unit. It's small, the yard is small and I've met quite a few of the neighbours, and they all seem lovely.

"My family are really happy for me.''
