Media Release Statement: Incident at Lajamanu Workers' Camp
4 April 2025
I was disappointed to learn of the distressing incident involving a contractor at the Lajamanu camp in the early hours of yesterday.
Three young males allegedly unlawfully entered the Rusca Developments workers' compound. After attempting to steal a work vehicle and break into several buildings, they confronted the site manager, threatening him. The situation escalated when one of the intruders threw a rock, striking the site manager, after he attempted to defend himself with a shifting spanner.
The offenders fled, and police attended the scene shortly after. A second incident involving rocks being thrown at the camp occurred later that morning. The site manager, while understandably shaken, did not suffer serious injuries and reported the events to police and company management later that morning.
The Northern Territory Police are investigating the incident.
Our thoughts are with the individual affected. Contractors who travel away from their families to help build stronger, safer communities deserve to feel safe and respected while doing their jobs.
Minister for Logistics and Infrastructure, Bill Yan, said the community must take responsibility for the actions of individuals.
"The community is on notice that if behaviour like this continues, they risk missing out on key infrastructure opportunities for their region," Minister Yan said.
I thank the Department of Logistics and Infrastructure for their swift response and their work to improve security on site.
Our government remains committed to improving the lives of Territorians - and that includes ensuring the safety of those who are delivering that progress.
