Mackay Whitsunday Highway Patrol will be out in force patrolling roads and ensuring motorists reach their destinations safely these school holidays.
From April 4 to April 21, officers will focus on high-visibility patrols with an increase in roadside breath and drug testing.
Historically serving as one of the busiest and most dangerous times of the year on Queensland's roads, police will be ramping up their road safety operations.
Mackay Whitsunday Highway Patrol Senior Sergeant Shane Edwards is urging all motorists to prioritise road safety and remember the fatal five: speeding, driving under the influence, fatigue, distraction, and wearing a seatbelt.
"There's never an excuse for speeding or driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs," said Senior Sergeant Edwards.
"If you are travelling long distances, plan ahead, stay alert, and take breaks."
"With the recent wet weather throughout the district, we're also urging motorists to remember to drive to conditions and remember: if it's flooded, forget it."
"We want everyone to enjoy the holidays and get home safely."
So far this year, Queensland Police Service (QPS) has conducted more than 488,000 random breath tests and more than 185,000 roadside drug tests across Queensland, detecting more than 9,200 motorists over the legal alcohol limit and more than 37,600 positive indications that motorist have driven under the influence of illicit drugs.
