The Rockliff Liberal Government is building more supported accommodation for young people at risk of homelessness with the Youth2Independence (Y2I) program.
Construction of the second $17 million Y2I facility in Hobart is close to completion and will accommodate up to 26 young people aged 16-24 years.
Minister for Housing and Construction, Nic Street said that this facility will give more young people the tools they need to succeed as they transition to adulthood.
"Y2I supports young people who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness, helping them to become independent by succeeding in education and training while providing secure accommodation," Minister Street said.
"Y2I is an important program because it is about so much more than providing a roof over the head of a young person in need. It also provides the foundation to live their best life.
"That makes this second Y2I facility in Hobart very special because we have been able to take advantage of under-utilised space on this site right next door to TAFE, and close to many support and community services.
"Each young person living at the facility will have their own studio space and access to an onsite manager, a shared kitchen, indoor and outdoor recreation spaces and designated quiet space."
The contemporary design has been created by Hobart-based, Liminal Studio, and built by Tasmanian firm, Vos Construction and Joinery Pty Ltd.
The Campbell Street facility is one of four Y2I facilities across the State, along with Trinity Hill in Hobart, Eveline House in Devonport and the recently completed expansion of Thyne House in Launceston. A fifth Y2I facility is under construction in Burnie.
"The facility will be managed by Anglicare Tasmania, who take a holistic approach to meeting the needs of young people and focuses on empowering them, so they can build better lives for themselves, and achieve genuine independence," he said.
"The Rockliff Liberal Government has a long-term housing plan, in partnership with Homes Tasmania, the private sector and our community housing partners, to deliver 10,000 more social and affordable homes by 2032.
"We are absolutely focused on taking our State to new levels and making it the best place to live, work and raise a family.
"Tasmanians have a range of housing needs based on their life stage and circumstance and this Y2I facility shows how, through Homes Tasmania, we are delivering more homes to meet the diverse housing needs of more Tasmanians.
"It is only the Rockliff Liberal Government who has the vision and aspiration to take Tasmania forward.
"By sticking to our long-term plan and doing what matters all Tasmanians we are keeping our economy strong."
