An Indian national is expected to appear in Downing Centre Local Court today (4 December, 2024) to face a charge for allegedly assaulting a security officer at Sydney Airport.
The AFP received a report on 28 October, 2024, about a man who had allegedly forced open an aerobridge door at the international terminal and boarded an aircraft.
Flight crew members spoke to the man, 27, who then exited the aircraft and allegedly assaulted a security officer, causing him to become unconscious.
AFP officers arrested the man and issued him with a court attendance notice for assault occasioning actual bodily harm, contrary to section 59(1) of the Crimes Act 1900 (Cth). The offence carries a maximum penalty of five years' imprisonment.
AFP Detective Inspector Dom Stephenson said there was zero tolerance for violence or abusive behaviour in airports.
"The AFP works closely with our partners in the airline industry to protect travellers and workers and will intervene if anyone's behaviour in or around an airport becomes aggressive or violent," Detective Inspector Stephenson said.
The AFP provides aviation security at nine major airports in Australia.
Anyone who sees suspicious behaviour at an Australian airport can call Airport Watch on 131 237.
