Indian Ocean Drive Reopens After Major Works

  • Major road upgrades on Indian Ocean Drive now complete
  • Project included widening and realignment of 33 kilometres between Leeman and Brand Highway
  • Road will formally reopen to traffic tomorrow

Major safety upgrades to Indian Ocean Drive are now completed, with a 33-kilometre section of the road between Leeman and Brand Highway officially reopening tomorrow.

The project included widening the entire 33-kilometre section, realigning eightkilometres between Eneabba-Coolimba Road and Freshwater Bay, as well as constructing two new overtaking lanes.

The upgrades will enhance safety on the coastal route to Dongara, while providing road users with a smoother and more efficient journey.

To facilitate the critical upgrades, Indian Ocean Drive was closed between Leeman and the Brand Highway in April last year, with detours being put in place.

The upgrades followed widening of 25 kilometres of Indian Ocean Drive between Jurien Bay and Green Head in 2023, and the installation of more than 200kilometres of audible edge and centre lines as part of the landmark Regional Road Safety Program.

The $55 million project was jointly funded by the Australian Government and Western Australian Government.

As stated by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

"The State Government is committed to improving regional road safety across Western Australia, and it's fantastic this important upgrade will be completed in time for the April school holidays.

"This work will provide a safer link for local residents and a number of coastal communities north of Perth.

"I thank the local community for their patience during the extended closure period to allow for these important works to be carried out.

"More than 200 kilometres of Indian Ocean Drive has now been upgraded in recent years - through widening, installation of audible edge and centre lines, construction of overtaking lanes, and installation of new safety barriers and signage - as we continue to improve safety for road users."
