Indonesia Independence Day 17 August

Department of State

On behalf of the United States of America, I extend our congratulations to the people of Indonesia on the occasion of your Independence Day.

As the United States and Indonesia celebrate 75 years of bilateral relations, we remain united in our goals of promoting democracy, respect for rule of law, and friendship between our peoples. Marking a historic new phase in our bilateral relations, President Jokowi and President Biden elevated U.S.-Indonesia ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership last November.

I congratulate Minister Prabowo Subianto on his election as the next president and look forward to working together to expand cooperation on issues of common concern, including fostering peace and security in the Indo-Pacific, tackling the climate crisis and the clean energy transition, promoting sustainable development, upholding human rights protections, and advancing Indonesia's digital transformation. Both bilaterally and through our engagement with ASEAN, the United States will continue to partner with Indonesia to promote stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.

On this Independence Day, we offer our best wishes to the Indonesian people.
