Detectives have launched an investigation after a stabbing at a correctional facility in the state's Central West.
About 2.45pm yesterday (25 September 2024), police were called to a correctional facility on the Great Western Highway, Marrangaroo, following reports of a concern for welfare.
On arrival, officers attached to Chifley Police Area Command were told a 31-year-old male prisoner had suffered a stab wound to the chest.
The man was treated by medical staff at the correctional facility before being airlifted to a hospital; however, he died on the way to the hospital.
The facility was locked down and a crime scene has been established.
Detectives from Chifley Police District, with assistance from the Homicide Squad and Corrective Services, have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
A report will be prepared for the information of Coroner.
