CFA is honouring the memory of firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty on International Firefighters' Day today.
International Firefighters' Day was established by CFA members in 1999 following the tragic death of five CFA firefighters in Linton the previous year.
Recognised worldwide, the date coincides with St Florian's Day in recognition of St Florian, the patron saint of firefighters.
The day remembers those who have made the ultimate sacrifice and also recognises the exceptional commitment, courage and selfless service of firefighters in protecting their communities.
Acting Chief Officer Garry Cook said today is a day to reflect on the tragic loss of firefighters around the world, but also a day to thank our firefighters who continue to serve.
"I also want to acknowledge the tragic loss of a fellow firefighter from Queensland yesterday and two of our firefighter colleagues from New Zealand in February this year. Our thoughts are with their family, friends and the broader firefighting community during this difficult time," A/CO Cook said.
"We honour our 80 fallen firefighters by continuing their vital firefighting work and constantly improving the safety of our members.
"We will always strive to learn and improve, using lessons from the past to drive changes to our training, processes and equipment.
"I encourage all Victorians to take a moment to reflect on those who are no longer with us and recognise the incredible commitment and contribution our members make every day to protect others."
This Sunday (7 May) hundreds of people will gather at Mt Macedon for our Annual Memorial Service.
The service is held each year as part of International Firefighters' Day to honour the 80 Victorian firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving their communities. It also provides the opportunity for family, friends and colleagues to reflect and remember.
Community members are invited the watch the memorial service via our livestream link here.
