Developing a multidisciplinary approach to researching the phenomenon of missing people is the focus of a new journal announced this month.
The International Journal of Missing Persons will publish international research in all areas related to missing persons. Launching March 2023, the journal seeks to encourage professionals as well as academic researchers to submit material for publication with a view to advancing knowledge, disseminating good practice, and fostering the scientific study of missing persons.
The main aim of the journal is to facilitate international exchange, stimulate debate and to encourage closer bonds between academic research and practitioners working in the field.
There is a great deal of potential for new research to fill in the missing gaps in existing knowledge of missing persons.
Areas relating to missing persons that will be covered in the journal include:
•Day to day missing person cases
•People going missing on a large scale
•Forensic identification techniques
•Missing person investigations
•Impact of going missing on families and friends
•The being missing experience
•Search and rescue
•Issues relating to justice, policy, and practice
Editor-in-Chief, Professor Shalev Greene, Leader of the Missing Persons Research Group at the University of Portsmouth, says: "There is a great deal of potential for new research to fill in the missing gaps in existing knowledge of missing persons. The International Journal of Missing Persons will accelerate discovery across disciplines by publishing the latest cross-cutting research on the connections between all areas of missing persons study. It is a multidisciplinary research area and an international approach is needed to further our understanding of the complicated issues surrounding missing persons."
Our new journal will be pivotal in providing a platform for exploration, discussion and debate on how to advance our knowledge and improve practice in the field of missing persons.
