The Tasmanian Government has introduced the Judicial Commissions Bill 2024.
The Judicial Commissions Bill 2024 establishes a framework for the management of judicial complaints in Tasmania.
Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Guy Barnett, said that judicial commissions exist in some form in other Australian jurisdictions and overseas, with the Bill tailored for Tasmania.
"The Bill establishes a fair, efficient and transparent process for gathering information and appropriately handling complaints in relation to judicial officers in Tasmania," the Attorney-General said.
"The framework in this Bill will operate in addition to, not instead of, existing avenues for the suspension or removal of judicial officers.
"A fit-for-purpose, contemporary justice system is integral to the success of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future.
"I would like to thank all those organisations and individuals who took the time to make a submission on the Bill as well as the members of the Tasmanian Justice Forum for their generous contribution to the design of the legislative framework.
"Community and stakeholder feedback has been invaluable to ensure we get the balance right."
