An investigation is underway following the seizure of several hundred kilograms of tobacco in the state's Southern Tablelands.
An investigation commenced after the owner of a rural property in Bigga reported to police that unknown people were trespassing on his property and growing tobacco.
Detectives and Rural Crime Investigators from The Hume Police District commenced inquiries into the alleged discovery.
Investigators attended the location yesterday (Tuesday 3 March 2020) and allegedly found several hundred kilograms of tobacco leaf drying in a shipping container on the property.
Police also located an infant crop of tobacco growing at the property.
A crime scene was established, and police have so far seized in excess of 500kg of tobacco. Arrangements are being made to destroy the crop today (4 March 2020).
Police are working alongside investigators from the Australian Taxation Office and the Australian Border Force-led Illicit Tobacco Taskforce.
