Iraqi-born Man Charged With Visa Breach

An Iraqi-born man has appeared before the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Thursday (18 July, 2024), charged with allegedly failing to comply with his visa-mandated curfew conditions.

The AFP charged the man, 49, on Thursday 18 July, 2024, after he was arrested at an address in Dandenong, Victoria.

It will be alleged the man breached a condition of his Commonwealth visa by failing to observe his residential curfew obligations.

The man has been charged with:

  • One count of failing to comply with a curfew condition, contrary to section 76C(1) of the Migration Act 1958 (Cth).

This offence carries a maximum penalty of five years' imprisonment and/or a $93,900 fine.

The man was refused bail and is next scheduled to appear before Melbourne Magistrates' Court on 29 July, 2024.
