Is Your Device Affected by 3G Network Shutdowns?

Launched by the Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association (AMTA) on behalf of the mobile telecommunications industry, the online tool will allow customers to enter their device's IMEI number for an indication of whether it may be affected by the 3G network switch offs.

Customers can access the lookup tool at www.3gclosure.com.au. The webpage contains instructions for locating a device's IMEI number, as well as important information about the switch offs and contact information for each provider.

Customers are not required to enter any personal information to use the tool. Entering the IMEI number will also not reveal any personal information.

Telstra and Optus have also launched SMS tools for customers to check for themselves if their mobile handset may be affected by the swtich off. Customers can text '3' to 3498 and the service will automatically respond with advice on whether or not their device is affected.

The switch off will impact the functionality of any device that relies on the 3G network, including some 4G devices that rely on the 3G network for Triple Zero calls.

These devices will appear to operate normally for voice, SMS and data, except will be unable to call Triple Zero once the 3G networks are switched off. These devices may include older devices, devices purchased overseas and brought into Australia, or those purchased on the 'grey market'.

Telstra's switch off is planned for 31 August 2024. Optus is planning to switch off its 3G network from 1 September 2024. While TPG Telecom/Vodafone has already switched off its 3G network, affected devices may be relying on Telstra and Optus' 3G networks for Triple Zero. TPG Telecom/Vodafone customers should not assume that their device is unaffected.
