Iwi Data Release From Census Boosts Te Whata Resources

From today, individuals and dwellings data by Māori descent and iwi affiliation will be available on Te Whata.

Te Whata is a by iwi, for iwi data platform developed by Te Kāhui Raraunga and supported by Stats NZ. It is available at www.tewhata.io.

Customised census iwi data requests are also available through Te Ara Takatū.

This is the second time Stats NZ has partnered with Te Kāhui Raraunga to release Māori data from the 2023 Census on the Te Whata platform. The historic joint initiative is part of work under the Mana Ōrite Relationship Agreement between the Data Iwi Leaders Group and Stats NZ.

"From collection to dissemination, we have worked closely with Te Kāhui Raraunga on the 2023 Census so that Māori have, access, and use their data," Stats NZ deputy chief executive - strategic engagement, Māori partnerships, and data capability Tia Warbrick said.

"The release of iwi data on Te Whata is an important milestone for Māori data governance as it puts Māori data in the hands of Māori," Warbrick said.

"This is the first time Te Kāhui Raraunga has released census data before it is shared by Stats NZ, and is the second major 2023 Census data release on Te Whata," Te Kāhui Raraunga data program manager Roimata Timutimu said.

"Te Whata has been developed to make Māori data more accessible for iwi Māori. Today's release is a significant step in the implementation of the Māori Data Governance model, better enabling iwi Māori to tell our own data stories, according to our own priorities and world views."

"Stats NZ is pleased to be able to prioritise making iwi and Māori data available on Te Whata," deputy government statistician and deputy chief executive - insights & statistics Rachael Milicich said.

"We saw following the first release of census data in May, that the platform and data are well used. We support and encourage everyone to use Te Whata," Milicich said.

Stats NZ will release the individuals and dwellings data set, which includes data on iwi affiliation, at 10:45am on 3 October 2024. This release will include data on dwelling counts, population counts by ethnicity, age, and gender, and total variable counts for 2023 Census topics for all of Aotearoa New Zealand.
