Our crew constructing the new footpath at James Oates Reserve

Kiama Council has completed a new section of footpath off Charles Street into James Oates Reserve, Minnamurra.

Director Engineering and Works Mike Dowd said the popular reserve, located at the mouth of the Minnamurra River, was one of the most popular destinations in the Municipality.

"The footpath improves pedestrian safety. It means those arriving on foot as well as cyclists, particularly younger ones, can access the reserve more easily and without having to share the road with cars and other vehicles," Mr Dowd said.

The work follows on from improvements done at the beginning of summer 2020, when Kiama Council upgraded the reserve's car park, nearly doubling the number of spaces.

"The upgraded car park was already an improvement to pedestrian safety. By setting out formal spaces throughout the site, reducing haphazard parking and improving traffic movement, we increased safe access for people walking to and from their cars."

"This new footpath continues that work, allowing safer access for pedestrians to the main reserve, amenities and tennis courts."

"Every summer, hundreds, if not thousands of people visit James Oates Reserve to swim, surf, fish, barbecue or launch their kayak or boat."

"Although we're seeing less visitors at present due to the winter season and COVID-19 restrictions, we're using this quiet time to continue our program of works across Kiama LGA."

"We look forward to welcoming locals and tourists to our parks and facilities once again when things return to normal."
