Jane Campbell has been appointed as a Special Magistrate of the ACT Magistrates Court, Attorney-General Shane Rattenbury announced today.
Ms Campbell, who was admitted to practice in 1990, brings a wealth of experience to the bench due to her work with Legal Aid ACT as their Deputy CEO and Head of Criminal Practice.
Ms Campbell has served as a prosecutor for the ACT Director of Public Prosecutions and as a Human Rights Solicitor at the Women's Legal Centre ACT. She is also a long-standing member of ACT Law Society's Criminal Law Committee.
Ms Campbell was appointed following a competitive application process, with her 12-month commission to commence on 11 January 2021.
"Ms Campbell has significant experience working across a number of legal areas in her career and brings vast expertise in criminal law, which will be of particular value to the ACT Magistrates Court," Attorney-General Rattenbury said.
"I would like to thank Ms Campbell for her commitment to this important appointment and I warmly welcome her to the role."
Ms Campbell's appointment will support the ongoing operation of the ACT Magistrates Court following the temporary absence of ACT Magistrate Bernadette Boss. Dr Boss was recently engaged by the Commonwealth Government to undertake a 12-month appointment as interim National Commissioner for Defence and Veteran Suicide Prevention, which commenced on 16 November 2020.
Margaret Hunter OAM has also had her appointment as a Special Magistrate extended until 30 April 2021.
