In the renowned Times Higher Education Ranking, the University of Würzburg ranks 111th worldwide in research quality and 54th worldwide in knowledge transfer. In Bavaria, it maintains third place.
The Times Higher Education (THE) has recently published its 2024 World University Ranking, which compares 1,904 universities from 108 countries. Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (JMU) has once again upped its overall score: from 58.4 in 2022 to 60.4 this year. The overall score reflects the performance of the universities in the following categories: research quality, research environment, teaching, industry and international outlook.
The THE ranking uses a total of 18 performance indicators that take into account the number of publications and citations, research and teaching reputation, success in securing research funding, international orientation and the teacher-to-student ratio. The JMU ranks 175th overall worldwide, 17th among the universities in Germany and 3rd among the universities in Bavaria.
Strong performance in research and transfer
The JMU has once again demonstrated its excellent potential in the 'research quality' category, in which it has secured 111th place worldwide and ranks as high as 4th among the universities in Germany. The 'research quality' category looks at the results of bibliometric analyses, which show that publications authored or co-authored by JMU researchers are cited very frequently by other researchers and have a particularly high impact on the debate in the research community.
Also, the JMU has reached the maximum score of 100 points for the attraction of federal, state and EU funding and is particularly pleased about the clear improvement in the 'knowledge transfer' category, which looks at the funding received from industry or foundations as well as the number of a university's publications that are cited in patents.
Well positioned for the Excellence Competition
JMU President Paul Pauli is particularly pleased about the University's strong performance in research - to which the THE Ranking and other university rankings attest - and says: 'The high scores we keep achieving for research quality and the clear upward trend in the 'knowledge transfer' category show that we are on the right track and that we can compete with the best universities in Germany in the Excellence Competition.'
