Jo Clay Elected As ACT Greens Deputy Leader

Jo Clay has been elected as Deputy Parliamentary Leader of the ACT Greens following a ballot of members to determine the future of the position.

The ACT Greens are the only state and territory-level political party in the country to offer one-member-one-vote leadership elections.

It follows the ACT Greens move in August last year to shift the decision out of the Legislative Assembly party room and completely into the hands of members.

"Grassroots democracy is central to how the ACT Greens do politics. In everything we do, we want to ensure people have a say in decisions that impact them. The ACT Greens continue to lead the way as the only party where members choose their leadership team in the ACT Parliament," said ACT Greens Party Director Philippa Moss.

As stated by ACT Greens Leader, Shane Rattenbury:

"Leadership is about empowering, uniting and elevating the voices of people across our community to achieve a shared vision for the world we share.

"Our team is very lucky to have Jo Clay step up as Deputy Leader, bringing her experience as a strong voice for Ginninderra and a tireless advocate for progressive change into the ACT Greens leadership team.

"Over the next four years, I'm confident that she will be a driving force on climate action, building more affordable housing and making our city easier to get around by improving our transport network."

As stated by ACT Greens Deputy Leader, Jo Clay:

"The ACT Greens are a party that has always put people before power. We are a community driven movement and it's therefore vital that our membership has input on the decisions that impact them. It is a privilege to be elected by them to the Deputy Leadership.

"With four Greens on the crossbench this term, we will push for bolder change on environment, housing and climate to provide Canberra with a constructive, collaborative and progressive alternative option to the major parties."

Earlier this year, the ACT Greens held the Australian-first ballot for members to determine the Parliamentary Leader and Deputy Parliamentary Leader of a political party.

Jo Clay ran uncontested in the Deputy Leadership nomination.
