Johns Hopkins Men's Lacrosse Defeats Denver in Opener

The eighth-ranked Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse team used a 5-1 run to break a third-quarter tie and held host Denver to just one goal in a 23-minute second-half span en route to a 13-10 season-opening win over the ninth-ranked Pioneers Saturday afternoon.

Denver pulled even at 7 with 10:40 remaining in the third quarter, but the Blue Jays scored three times in a span of less than two minutes to take a 10-7 lead. Hunter Chauvette, Chuck Rawson, and Russell Melendez all scored during the run for the Blue Jays with Melendez and Chauvette also picking up assists. Complete box score

Melendez paced the Blue Jays offensively with four goals and two assists, and Rawson added the first hat trick of his career as he scored on all three of his shots. Chauvette (two goals, two assists) and Matt Collison (one goal, three assists) added four-point games, Logan Callahan won 15-of-24 faceoffs, and Luke Staudt posted 12 saves in goal in his Hopkins debut.

The win was the 100th in the coaching career of Hopkins head coach Peter Milliman.

Hopkins returns to action on on Tuesday at Towson at 6 p.m.
