- Walking with Western Australian Women historical walk trail launches today
- The Karrakatta Cemetery walk celebrates 22 prominent WA women
Local Government Minister Hannah Beazley officially launched the Walking with Western Australian Women historical walk trail at Karrakatta Cemetery today.
A collaboration between the Western Australian Government's Metropolitan Cemeteries Board and WA Women's Hall of Fame, the new trail is dedicated to 22 of our State's most influential women.
The trail celebrates the positive changes women have made in our State's leadership, health, First Nations, aged care and disability support sectors. They include:
- the first female in Australian Parliament, Edith Cowan;
- the first female Labor parliamentarian in Australia, May Holman;
- the first female to practise medicine in WA, Dr Roberta Jull;
- the first female Justice of the Peace and first female City of Subiaco councillor Roseann Fuhrmann; and
- Annie Dorrington, who contributed to the design of the Australian flag in 1901.
To access a virtual map and further information, use your smart phone or tablet device to scan the QR code on each sign along the trail. Free maps are also available outside the administration office. For more information, visit www.mcb.wa.gov.au

"I'm proud to launch this new trail showcasing these fascinating and inspirational women.
"These women, from all walks of life, share a common bond of forging women's interests and protecting the vulnerable.
"Their names are the basis for many of our community facilities, roads, health and educational institutions, scholarships, and significant governmental achievement."
As stated by Nedlands MLA Dr Katrina Stratton:
"I encourage all community members to visit Karrakatta Cemetery and discover these remarkable women and keep their stories alive for generations to come.
"Karrakatta Cemetery has been serving the Western Australian community for 125 years; it plays a significant role as guardian of our State's history and holds many untold stories of noteworthy women."
