Karin Holmsten at Karolinska Institutet has been awarded Pfizer's and the Swedish Society for Urological Oncology's (SFUO) newly established research grant for oncologists in urology. The grant of 50,000 SEK was awarded on October 17th at SFUO's annual meeting in Stockholm.
Karin Holmsten, postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Oncology-Pathology and senior consultant in oncology at the Surgery and Oncology Clinic, Capio S:t Göran's Hospital, is the first recipient of this grant for her research in prostate cancer.
"I am very happy and honored to have been awarded Pfizer's and SFUO's oncology grant, and it is a valuable contribution to carry out my research project. My research focuses on the treatment of elderly men with advanced prostate cancer, defined as 75 years or older, regarding the choice of systemic treatment, side effects, comorbidity, treatment effect, and survival. By looking at clinical 'real-world data,' the goal is to eventually provide better and more individualized treatment to these patients," says Karin Holmsten.
Promoting patient-centered research and development of new treatments
"We want to promote clinical research in uro-oncology that can improve and increase the knowledge and care of patients with tumors in the kidneys, bladder, prostate, and penis. With this grant, we hope to enable more of our clinically active members to combine their clinical service with continued patient-centered research," says Karin Söderkvist, scientific secretary of the Swedish Society for Urological Oncology.
"Cancer research is a high-priority area for us and the foundation for the development of new treatments. We are very pleased to collaborate with SFUO by supporting new Swedish research in urological tumor diseases," says Johannes Arpegard, medical advisor at Pfizer.
