Karolinska Institutet MWLC Postdoc Grant 2025 Open

Karolinska Institutet (KI) Ming Wai Lau Centre for Reparative Medicine (MWLC) announces up to ten grants for Postdoctoral positions in the field of Reparative Medicine, including stem cell regenerative medicine, bioengineering, reprogramming and biomanufacturing toward translation.

To be eligible to apply for a Postdoctoral grant you must be a Principal Investigator (PI) working at KI. Note that the application must be submitted by the PI who presents her/his desired candidate and the postdoctoral research project. PIs can apply for one grant only.

Awarded proposals will be funded with a budget of 1,000,000 SEK per year for a maximum period of two years, with the possibility to extend the funding for an additional year after an application for renewal. The funding cannot be used for stipends.

The deadline for submission of a proposal is 10 June 2025.

The awards will be announced in October 2025.

Full application instructions

The application for MWLC Postdoctoral fellowships includes:

  • Applicant (PI) CV (Max two pages, including max ten relevant publications).
  • Desired Post Doc CV (Max two pages including max ten relevant publications). Postdocs already at KI are accepted.
  • Postdoctoral research project clearly stating the work the Postdoc should perform in the given two-year timeframe.

The project description should include:

  1. Abstract (1/2 page):
    • State the goals of the proposal.
    • Summarise the overall plans of the research proposed and how it will meet the stated objectives of the proposal.
    • Describe the rationale for the studies and techniques you will use to pursue the goals.
  2. Specific Aims (1/2 page):
    • Explain the broad, long-term objectives and the goal of the specific research proposed.
    • Identify and enumerate each specific aim of the proposal, in a concise and stepwise fashion, and how that will lead to the overarching goal of this research.
  3. Rationale and Significance (1/2 page):
    • Summarize the context and background of the present application and the specific rationale for the work proposed.
    • Evaluate existing knowledge and specifically identify the gaps that the project is intended to fill.
    • State how the proposed research meets MWLC's goals of funding innovative, perhaps scientifically risky, and untested research.
    • If the aims of the application are achieved, state how this information will contribute to the development of diagnostics and/or therapies.
  4. Research Design and Methods (up to 2 pages):
    • Describe concisely, but in sufficient detail to permit evaluation of the merit of the research, the experimental design, methods, and techniques to be employed to achieve the goals specified in the proposal.
    • Identify the new or risky aspects of the research, anticipated pitfalls, and plans to overcome or circumvent difficulties that may arise.
    • Describe the methods of analysis of results, including criteria for success of the preliminary studies.
  5. Ethical considerations (up to 1/2 page):
    • Reflect on which ethical issues are relevant in the project.
  6. Feasibility (up to 1/2 page):
    • Provide any information that will help to establish the experience and competence of the investigator to pursue the proposed project.
  7. Laboratory/Clinical Facilities Including Major Equipment (up to 1/2 page):
    • Provide a short description of the facilities and environment in which the work will be done, and the major equipment and resources available for conducting the proposed research.
    • Discuss ways in which the proposed studies will benefit from unique features of the scientific environment or employ useful collaborative arrangements where applicable.
  8. References (up to 1 pages):
    • List all references used in the body of the proposal.
  9. Budget:
    • Show how the outline of the scientific project will be funded in total. This call will award max 1 000 000 Sek per year as a fixed amount including indirect costs. The amount should be used within KI and cannot be transferred to any external part. The post doc selected for the award must be 100% employed at KI.

Review and Award process

MWLC Postdoctoral grant applications will be reviewed by scientists from institutions outside KI.
