The nomination for the Karuah Place Plan at the NSW Awards for Planning Excellence recognises Council's innovative planning approach to improve the wellbeing and liveability of our communities.
The Awards recognise and acknowledge innovation and excellence in Planning across the state, and showcase leading practice across a range of planning disciplines and sectors.
Strategy and Environment Section Manager Brock Lamont said the Karuah Place Plan is about improving liveability and wellbeing, as well as delivering economic growth for the river-side village, traditionally owned by the Worimi people.
"Through community engagement and consultation, we've ensure the plan recognises the values and priorities of the entire Karuah community including local businesses, community leaders, and the Worimi," Mr Lamont said
"The actions and projects in the plan highlight the stunning natural environment that Karuah is known for while balancing the need for new housing, business growth and job opportunities for locals.
"It's focused on creating a more connected town centre, improving accessibility to the waterfront, enhancing and protecting the natural environment, and providing additional housing and improved community facilities for all to enjoy.
"We're proud to be nominated for Best Strategic Planning Project at these awards. It shows us our peers recognise the value of our place planning and implementation approach, and can see the difference it makes to communities at a grass-roots level," he added.
Place Planning Project Manager Rebecca Morley says the nomination has created a sense of pride in Karuah locals, as well as acknowledging the importance of community involvement in the implementation of the Plan.
"The Plan inspires and encourages community involvement in creating a better place through conservation, beautification and civic pride projects, activations and event opportunities," Ms Morley said.
"We're grateful to the Karuah community for supporting the Place Plan and being active in its implementation, which has contributed to its overall success and ultimately, our nomination at the Awards.
"Since the Plan's adoption in March 2022 the community have established the monthly Garuwa Community Market, we've commenced the Karuah Konnect on-demand bus service, and have reinstated a scenic cruise along the Western Harbour, from Nelson Bay to Karuah return.
"We love how passionate Karuah locals are to get stuck in, and help us implement actions and improvements from the Plan. If Council win this award – it'll be a win for the community," she added.
The Awards for Planning Excellence ceremony is being held this evening, Thursday 3 November in Sydney. The winners of each category will be put forward as nominees in the National Awards for Planning Excellence to be held in 2023.
