Katherine Police Arrest: Unlawful Vehicle Use

Northern Territory Police have arrested a 40-year-old male in relation to an unlawful use of motor vehicle incident in Katherine on Tuesday.

Around 7.45pm, the Joint Emergency Services Communication Centre received reports of a motor vehicle crash on the Victoria Highway near Bicentennial Road in Katherine.

The vehicle involved was parked outside a restaurant on the Victoria Highway, while its driver was picking up takeaway food. The driver's wife was inside the car when a 40-year-old male allegedly entered the driver's seat of the car, causing her to flee the vehicle.

The offender allegedly unlawfully drove the car away at speed before the vehicle crashed and rolled. The offender was the sole occupant of the vehicle at the time of the crash.

Police attended and identified the offender, who was taken to Katherine District Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Senior Sergeant Warren Scott said, "I commend the quick response and apprehension of the offender by our Katherine general duties officers who did an excellent job alongside our Dog Operations Unit members.

"Northern Territory Police will continue to work tirelessly to serve and protect the community."
