About 7:40am today, Saturday 13 January 2024, the crew on board a bulk carrier reported an orange object in the water about 17nm west / north-west of Two Rocks, believing it may be an upturned life raft.
The Water Police Coordination Centre deployed DFES Marine Rescue Two Rocks and Police Air Wing to investigate.
The police helicopter arrived on scene and located the orange item in the water. DFES Marine Rescue Two Rocks recovered the item from the water, and established it was a 1.5m kayak.
There was no signs of anyone in distress in the area at the time.
Water Police are seeking assistance to identify the owner of the kayak, so they can confirm there is no person missing or in distress, and return the item to its owner.
Anyone who has a similar kayak is asked to check it is where it was last stored, and if the kayak is missing to please call Water Police on 9442 8600.
