Council's kerbside collection of hard waste in Machans Beach, Holloways Beach, Yorkeys Knob, Caravonica, Kamerunga and Lake Placid will continue this week.
Free kerbside hard waste collection has been underway in those areas most affected by flooding caused by ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper since before Christmas.
The initial focus was on smaller items and clearing organic material from inside fridges and freezers.
Council will now focus on the removal of larger items, including fridges and freezers.
Residents are encouraged to place flood-damaged personal items, furnishing, appliances and building materials on the front verge/kerb for collection.
Please be aware of machinery and trucks operating within the waste collection areas.
Free green waste disposal
To assist residents across the Cairns Local Government Area, Council will hold a free green waste disposal from Saturday 6 January to Sunday 14 January.
Council will not be collecting green waste from the kerbside. Residents are encouraged to put green waste to the side and bring it to the waste transfer stations during the free green waste drop-off period.
The upcoming free green waste disposal period is in addition to four free green waste disposal periods offered annually, which are scheduled to occur in February, May, August, and November.
Kerbside rubbish collections
Regular kerbside rubbish and recycling collections have resumed, please have your bins out by 6am.
Residents are encouraged to contact Council's customer service on 1300 69 22 47 to report fallen debris on footpaths and roads. Flood-impacted areas will be prioritised.
Water levels stabilised
Residents are no longer required to conserve water as levels in the reservoirs have now stabilised.
Water supply across the region reached critical levels late last month when water supply intakes were blocked by debris as a result of the severe weather.
Although the intakes were cleared and water was restored to most of Cairns, residents were asked to conserve water while repairs to damage mains were completed, reserves returned to normal levels and network was stabled.
Residents are reminded that while there is no longer a requirement to conserve water, Council has permanent water conservation measures in place to promote responsible and efficient use of town water.
There include:
- Odd-numbered houses permitted to use sprinklers on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday between the hours of 5am - 9am and 5pm - 9pm.
- Even-numbered houses permitted to use sprinklers on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday between the hours of 5am - 9am and 5pm - 9pm.
- No sprinkler use permitted on Monday.
- Hand-held hoses with a trigger nozzle, watering cans and buckets can be used at any time.
