- Project to deliver state-of-the-art services for women and families in WA
The Cook Government has today signed a Letter of Intent to progress negotiations for a Managing Contractor on the new world-class Women and Babies Hospital Project.
The signing was with global construction company Webuild and Australian construction company Roberts Co, as joint venture partners.
This marks major progress to delivering the landmark project, which is set to expand services and choice for women, newborns and families and replace the century-old King Edward Memorial Hospital.
The Letter of Intent represents a key step towards the appointment of a Managing Contractor for the State's biggest hospital project in a decade. Once all terms are agreed, the contract will be executed to formally appoint a Managing Contractor.
Enabling works on the new hospital development are expected to begin in 2025.
The $1.8 billion project includes a world-class Women and Babies Hospital in the Fiona Stanley Hospital precinct, a major expansion of Osborne Park Hospital and an expansion of neonatal services at Perth Children's Hospital.
As stated by Premier Roger Cook:
"Today represents an important milestone for the New Women and Babies Hospital Project as we take the next step towards appointing a Managing Contractor, marking my Government's commitment to deliver on what we said we would.
"We will build a brand new public hospital co-located at the Fiona Stanley Hospital precinct to provide world-class maternity, gynaecology and obstetric services to women and families right across the State, and we're getting on with the job of doing it.
"Only a WA Labor Government has runs on the board to deliver transformational infrastructure projects to cater to the future of our growing State.
"This landmark project will deliver state-of-the-art facilities for women and babies in WA, with a brand new hospital and expanded services at other sites across Perth.
"The project is a win for all Western Australians, with more than 1,400 local jobs to be created during construction, and with great opportunities for local suppliers and contractors."
As stated by Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson:
"We are building a world-class Women and Babies Hospital which will expand services and choice for women and families and replace King Edward Memorial Hospital.
"This significant project will usher in a new era in healthcare for women, babies and their families.
"The Liberals are a risk with no plan for maternity services in the State. The Leader of the Liberal Party says she will tear up any contract this Government signs."
