It's a basic human right to be able to access a clean, safe and private place to go to the toilet.
And Mildura now has three Changing Places facilities that are fully operational for people who cannot use standard accessible toilets.
Newly-elected Disability Inclusion Advisory Committee Chair Chris Riordan said the facilities allowed people with high support needs to participate in all elements of community life.
"The word really is dignity," he said. "It gives people the confidence to go out and do their shopping, or go to the riverfront, or out to the sports precinct, and know that there are facilities close by.
"They don't have to limit their time out because they are worried they won't be able to access a suitable toilet."
Changing Place facilities include:
- Height-adjustable adult-sized change table
- Constant-charging ceiling track hoist system
- Centrally located peninsula toilet
- Additional circulation space (more than standard accessible toilets)
- Automatic door with a clear opening of 950mm at a minimum
- Privacy screen
- Height adjustable showers can also be included
New DIAC member Teressa Peirce said many people with high support needs would avoid coming out if suitable facilities were not accessible.
"They now know they have the option of being clean, fresh and safe when they come into town," she said. "They can take their time, continue their shopping and just get on with their lives."
A Masters Locksmith Access Key (MLAK) will be required for the facilities, which are located at 144 Ninth Street, Powerhouse Place and the Mildura Sporting Precinct.
This key is available from any local locksmith provider to customers who cannot use standard accessible toilets or have written authority from one of the following:
- A letter from your doctor;
- Proof of eligibility - copy of your Disability Card, Pension Card;
- A copy of your Disability Parking Permit;
- A letter from a disability organisation.
