- Five new houses for Aboriginal health employees in Halls Creek
- Perth-based builder Murray River North Group constructed the new homes
- At least 40 per cent of jobs created made available to Aboriginal workers
- Funded by Cook Government's $200 million North-West Aboriginal Housing Fund
The Cook Labor Government has delivered five new modular homes for Kimberley region Aboriginal health employees that are providing affordable, safe and secure housing to staff of Yura Yungi Medical Services in Halls Creek.
The five new homes were constructed by Murray River North Group and is part of an innovative partnership between the Cook Government and Yura Yungi, owners of the land on which they have been built.
Yura Yungi is an Aboriginal community-controlled health service, providing culturally appropriate preventative public health care and programs to residents of Halls Creek and surrounding communities.
The five new dwellings will allow Yura Yungi to attract, upskill and retain local Aboriginal people who may otherwise choose not to pursue employment in the regional centre.
The projects were delivered through the $200 million North-West Aboriginal Housing Fund, which invests in projects driven by Aboriginal people and communities, with a strong focus on co-designing solutions with Aboriginal people in WA's north-west.
As stated by Housing Minister John Carey:
"The Cook Labor Government is getting on with delivering a record $4.5 billion investment in housing and homelessness measures.
"These five new modular homes were funded through our $200 million North-West Aboriginal Housing Fund, established to create pathways towards social and economic independence and wellbeing for Aboriginal people in WA's northern regions.
"More importantly, these homes will provide affordable, safe and secure housing to allow Yura Yungi to attract and retain local Aboriginal workers in Halls Creek.
"Yura Yungi plays a unique and integral role in Halls Creek, empowering the community to take responsibility for safeguarding their health and wellbeing and is a key employer of local Aboriginal people."
As stated by Kimberley MLA Divina D'Anna:
"The Cook Government's $200 million North-West Aboriginal Housing Fund demonstrates how the innovative delivery of safe and affordable housing can build opportunity, capacity and wellbeing - right here in Halls Creek.
"I'm proud to be part of the Cook Labor Government as we continue to partner with Aboriginal people to increase housing options in a way that supports their aspirations, responds to local circumstances and facilitates educational, training and employment outcomes."
