Kiama Council congratulates Gerringong Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) on the completion of the new club house and kiosk and has now issued a temporary 12-month licence to occupy the premises.
In Council's ordinary meeting this week, it was resolved that Council:
- Congratulate Gerringong Surf Lifesaving Club (GSLSC) on their work in obtaining Federal, State, Local government and sponsorship funding to build a new community asset, being the new clubhouse and associated facilities, along with their continued commitment to the local community and visitors.
- Work with GSLSC to occupy the new building so the club can patrol Werri Beach and provide training and education to its members including its nippers program.
- Receive a report on the history of the previous and current GSLSC kiosk, including the permissibility under the current lease, land classification and zoning, as well as, any considerations for future compliance of a kiosk at the clubhouse. Noting that the kiosk provides a critical income stream to the club.
- Subject to compliance with section 2.74 of the NSW State Environmental Planning Policy (Transport and Infrastructure) 2021, facilitate the construction of a new concrete footpath from the existing footpath on the western side of Pacific Avenue to the public toilet facilities on the southern side of the new GSLSC clubhouse to enable access to these facilities, noting GSLSC is ready to build this path.
Kiama Mayor Cameron McDonald said: "Council unanimously congratulated Gerringong Surf Life Saving Club for their hard work in building the new club house. It's a wonderful community asset and I'm very much looking forward to attending the official launch on 1 March."
The Mayor also thanked local surf clubs, Council's professional Lifesavers and volunteer life guards for their efforts to keep beachgoers safe over what has been a difficult summer season with several drownings.
Council has now issued Gerringong SLSC with a 12-month temporary licence. This will allow time for negotiations in relation to a new, longer-term lease for the operation of the Surf Club, and for Council to review its Plan of Management to ensure all requirements for the Surf Club are captured within this Plan of Management.
The proposed new lease will be placed on public exhibition as per the requirements of the Local Government Act 1993, enabling Council to seek comments and submissions from the public.
