On 11 August 1859 the Municipality of Kiama was proclaimed with three wards: Jamberoo, Gerringong and Kiama.
The first council meeting on 26 September was held at the Adams Hotel, with James Colley elected as Mayor.
Apparently, the new Council were not completely aware of the boundaries of the new municipality and wrote to the NSW Government for a map.
Council also established a rates system which instantly proved unpopular.
Though unpopular, rates are still with us.
Thankfully other Council initiatives have proven more agreeable, such as tourism.
We're renowned for our lush green hills, beautiful beaches, cycling and walking tracks, music festivals, artists trails, wineries, markets and sporting events that attract visitors throughout the year.
This contrasts with a scathing review from 1887:
"Kiama is prettily situated, but it is one of the dullest places conceivable. There is one attraction, however. Just outside the town, near the lighthouse, is a wonderful freak of nature, the Kiama Blowhole."
