Kemspey Shire Council recently undertook emergency foreshore works at Killick Creek in Crescent Head designed to stabilise the creek and safeguard public spaces. Our team carefully excavated a small pilot channel at the creek's eastern end, guiding water flows closer to the southern creek bank.
The works were required as Killick Creek had changed course, forming a new meander to the west. This new meander formed because of sand build up where Killick Creek flows into the ocean, resulting in a significant risk to the integrity of the western sand dune, public infrastructure including the footbridge, beach access, and public safety.
Ongoing dune assessment
Sand removed during the excavation was used to reinforce the redirected creek bed, adding an extra layer of protection to both the footbridge and the adjacent dune.
Unfortunately, the dune closest to the ocean is still unstable due to the loss of sand at its base.
Council is monitoring the dunes whilst coastal processes naturally return sand to the beach.
When there is sufficient sand along the front of the dune system, Council will make an assessment to decide if further stabilisation or rehabilitation works, such as planting, are required.
In its current state, any stabilisation works such as fencing or planting would likely fail and result in being buried, swept into the ocean or blown into the hind dunes. Council is aware of resident concerns about the dunes and is working with locals to ensure safe and effective actions are taken at the right time.
Zoned as both natural waterways and public recreation areas under the Kempsey Local Environmental Plan, this area requires thoughtful management to balance conservation with public accessibility - a balance that Council staff constantly strive to achieve.
