In our globalized world, confident command of the English language is indispensable. Studying in the language that virtually dominates science and business worldwide enables students to build up and enhance their skills in English. Starting with the 2025 summer term, KIT (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology ) will extend its range of courses held in English by adding three new master's degree programs: "Mechatronics and Information Technology," "Electrical Engineering and Information Technology," and "Computer Science." This is another step towards internationalization of KIT.
Study programs in English are a crucial option for various target groups. Besides appealing to German-speaking students, who want to build an international career, these programs also attract English-speaking students from all over the world.
"In order to be perceived as an institution with an international profile and to be attractive for as many talents as possible, a study program in English is a must," says Professor Jan S. Hesthaven, President of KIT. "A major part of the exchange between science and the working environment takes place in English. Diversity is an important driver of creativity and innovation. It is our task and duty to prepare our students for this in the best possible manner, no matter which career they will pursue after their studies."
Every Fifth Student is from Abroad
The three new master's degree programs at KIT will start on April 22, 2025, which is the first day of the summer term. "Electrical Engineering and Information Technology" and "Mechatronics and Information Technology" will replace the former German-language master's degree programs "Elektrotechnik und Informationstechnik" and "Mechatronik und Informationstechnik." The latter is the most sought-after mechatronics master's degree program in Germany. The "Computer Science" program will be held concurrently with the existing German-language "Informatik" master's degree program, supplementing the range of programs offered by the KIT Department of Informatics.
In total, KIT now offers one bachelor's degree program, 15 master's degree programs, and five doctoral programs held entirely in English. With these options, KIT is going to attract an increasing number of foreign students, thereby strengthening its international orientation. In the 2024/25 winter term, around 5,250 of the nearly 22,750 KIT students - more than every fifth student -came from abroad.
