Knives Seized And Offenders Charged At Gold Coast

Gold Coast Police conducted Operation Luminous, targeting transport hubs and shopping centres across the district on October 24.

The high-visibility policing operation focused on public safety, street checks, and community engagement.

Officers conducted 110 handheld scanning operations, 92 street checks, 7 full shopping centre walk-throughs, and 86 community engagements.

The operation led to the detection of two knives and charges being laid against two offenders for four offences.

A 37-year-old Currumbin man was arrested near a light rail stop at Southport after voluntarily declaring a knife in his backpack during a wanding operation. A search of his property also revealed a drug utensil. He was charged with possession of a knife in a public place or a school, commit public nuisance and possess utensils or pipes etc that had been used.

He is due to appear at Southport Magistrates Court on November 21.

A 17-year-old male from Currumbin Waters also handed over a knife during a wanding operation at a Gold Coast shopping centre. He was charged with possession of a knife in a public place or a school.

He is due to appear at Southport Childrens Court today, October 30.

Acting Superintendent Scott Knowles said the operation demonstrated the ongoing commitment to keeping the community safe.

"Community safety is always at the forefront of our operations.

"By maintaining a strong police presence in areas frequented by the public, we were able to intervene early, prevent potential incidents, and remove dangerous items such as knives from the community.

"We've seen firsthand how effective these operations have been in reducing knife crime and the recent extension of Jack's Law in new authorised locations enhances our ability to take dangerous items off the streets," Acting Superintendent Knowles said.
