Knives Seized in Coffs Harbour During Operation Ares

Several knives have been seized at Coffs Harbour during a high-visibility police operation run by Police Transport Command North Central yesterday.

Under Operation Ares, officers use handheld scanners – or electronic metal-detecting 'wands' – to reduce knife crime and boost community safety.

The operation ran between 10am and 10pm yesterday (Thursday 13 February 2025) at three areas in Coffs Harbour including the railway station and two shopping precincts.

In total, 249 people were stopped and scanned using hand-held devices. Of those, four people were searched, resulting in four knives being produced.

Two men aged 18 and 41, and two women aged 37 and 45, were each issued court attendance notices for custody of knife in public place.

A fifth person – a man aged 44 – was arrested for allegedly breaching bail.

Operation Ares will continue to run in various areas across NSW.
