The koala project team at North Coast Local Land Services and our partners at the Hastings Macleay Koala Recovery Partnership and the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Trust have been busy the last few months! In this time, we have been getting out onto the Country (with a bit of wading through floodwaters!) and surveying all successful EOI applicant properties in the Maria River area. These ecological surveys will enable the development of areas of protected koala habitat.
We have encountered some stands of beautiful old-growth forest, as well as plenty of koala feed tree species with fresh koala scat at their bases.
Do you know how to tell the difference between possum scat and koala scat? The key is all in the sniffing… Koala poo is the only one that will smell like nothing but crushed gum leaves! Shape and colour help too, koala poo is about the size of an olive and a deep green colour, have you seen koala scat on your property?
The Australian Governments Environment Restoration Fund supports this project, and North Coast Local Land Services is now accepting expressions of interest for properties in the Port Macquarie local government area.
